I lost 52 lbs. and have kept it off!

Man on scaleMy name is George and I wanted to share with people how I lost weight and kept it off. And I didn’t spend a fortune doing it either. I don’t believe in buying in to the Nutri System plan and all the other ongoing special foods purchases that are advertised.

If you just use common sense, stick to one real, honest plan, keep at it and don’t give up, any one can lose the weight they want to. One fact I do know for sure. If you want to lose weight AND keep it off, you must lose the weight slowly over time. The fast weight loss fad diets do not work for the long term. Losing weight and keeping it off permanently is an eating style change, not just a diet to lose weight.

Before I go any further let me tell you a little about my self.

I’m not a doctor, nutrition specialist, dietician, diet guru, weight trainer or any other person in the medical or diet field. What I am is a guy with a degree in Finance and Accounting that has always worked in that field. And I want to just share what worked for me. Also, I don’t like to spend money that I don’t have to. I’m not cheap, I just don’t like to waste money.

On August 10, 2009 I went to my doctor for flu symptoms. Of course the first thing they do when they call you back is weigh you. I was shocked when I weighed 196 lbs. Now, 196 don’t sound too bad, until you take into account I’m only 5′ 6″ (5′ 5 ¾”).

I shouldn’t have been shocked though. I knew I was overweight. Obviously you can see such things about yourself. I just didn’t realize the amount. So, I decided to lose some weight. But I wanted to do it my own way.

Yesterday I weighed 144.6. Yes you see it correctly. No typo. Two years later I lost 52 lbs. . I will eventually post my excel spreadsheet with dates and weight. And I didn’t spend one nickel on any special program or diet. I made up my own diet from stuff I read; saw on the internet, looked into and common sense.

First, I figured that if I was fat and wanted to lose fat then logically I wanted to reduce my fat calories. Seeing all the commercials for Subway, I looked at their nutrition pages on their web site. I decided that everyday for lunch I was going to have a 6″ white, turkey sandwich, lettuce, tomato, mustard and NO mayo (I don’t like mayo anyways). Surprisingly it didn’t bother me to have the same thing everyday. Sometimes I would cheat a little and have a ham and turkey. Now there were some days that I had to go out to lunch other than subway but I tried to limit it. I stayed on this plan for roughly a year. I would say out of the whole week I stayed on my lunch plan 4 out of 5 days.

Second, I took a look at breakfast. I never ate breakfast. Just didn’t have time and if I did I would just go through McDonalds or Hardees drive thru and get a sausage biscuit. I decided I was going to make time for breakfast and it was going to be Special K everyday. I was, and still am, religious about it. I only have the Special K with strawberries or the yogurt Special K. Never just the plain Special K.

Third, I always knew one of my biggest weaknesses was eating snacks after dinner. I cut that out right away. It was tough but I did do it.

So I got these three things down, but I still had a problem with dinner. My wife likes to cook, and she is a very good one. She also likes to try different, new recipes. So what I decided to do was not change what we had for dinner but changed my portions of what I had. I did ask that we not have so much, especially sides. This was pretty tough also, because if the food is there I will eat it. I did manage this pretty good though

So there you go. This is what I did to lose almost 50 Lbs. I know it took 18 months but there were times that I cheated, didn’t pay attention, Christmas, Thanksgiving, other holidays and stuff.

There are several other things that I did and I will share those in other posts. In the meantime I came across the The Diet Solution Program. I followed their program and didn’t even know it. This program is regimented, goal oriented program that can keep you disciplined in your goals and reach them sooner than my 2 years. I really recommend you take a look at it.
